Insulin:

Is a hormone produced by the pancreas that acts like a key to hydrolase glucose from the food we eat; pass from the blood stream into the cells in the body to produce energy. All carbohydrate foods are broken down into glucose.

Diabetes is having a blood glucose level greater than or equal to 126 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL) after an eight-hour fast (not eating anything), or by having a non-fasting glucose level greater than or equal to 200 mg/dL along with symptoms of diabetes, or a glucose level of greater than or equal to 200 mg/dL on a two-hour glucose tolerance test, or an HbA1c greater than or equal to 6.5%.

The most common types of diabetes are type 1, type 2.

Type 1 Diabetes

Type 1 diabetes is also called insulin-dependent diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is usually diagnosed in children and young adults, although it can appear at any age. Type 1 is an autoimmune condition. It’s caused by the body; attacking its own pancreas with antibodies. In people with type 1 diabetes, the damaged pancreas doesn’t make insulin.

A number of medical risks are associated with type 1 diabetes. Type 1 damage the tiny blood vessels in eyes (called diabetic retinopathy), nerves (diabetic neuropathy), and kidneys (diabetic nephropathy). Even more serious is the increased risk of heart disease and stroke.

Type 2 Diabetes

With type 2 diabetes, the pancreas usually makes some insulin. But either the amount made isn’t enough for the body’s needs, or the body’s cells resist it. When there isn’t enough insulin or the insulin is not utilized as it should be, glucose (sugar) can’t get into the body’s cells and builds up in the bloodstream instead. When glucose builds up in the blood instead of going into cells, it causes damage in multiple areas of the body. Also, since cells aren’t getting the glucose they need, they can’t function properly.
